Noun Clause Song Contest

Think of the English songs that you love. Do any of them have good noun clauses? A prize will be awarded (by yours truly) for the best suggestion. You have until Monday to submit your ideas. You may not use any of the songs which I've posted so far.

Post your suggestion--along with the lyrics--as a comment. Underline the noun clauses in the song.

I still can not download the song, so i post the quick link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WHyzxVlOI98
And the lyrics with noun clause is : I wonder how, i wonder why, I wonder where they are, the days we have, the songs we sang together.

  4. The part of "I wonder how, i wonder why, i wonder where they are" is the noun clause, right?

    1. a noun clause must have the noun clause word followed by S + V.
I wonder WHERE THEY ARE is good, but I wonder HOW or I wonder WHY is not complete.

    2. it is the parallel structure, it means i wonder how they are, i wonder why they are, i wonder where they are, but the part is omitted, i guess.

  5. The man WHO CANNOT BE MOVED

Going back to the corner WHERE I FIRST SAW YOU
Gonna camp in my sleeping bag I'm not gonna move
Got some words on cardboard, got your picture in my hand
Saying, "If you see this girl can you tell her WHERE I AM?

Some try to hand me money, they don't understand
    I'm not broke – I'm just a broken-hearted man
I know it makes no sense but what else can I do?
How can I move on WHEN I AM STILL IN LOVE WITH YOU?

    [Chorus:]
'Cause if one day you wake up and find THAT YOU ARE MISSING ME.
And your heart starts to wonder WHERE ON THIS EARTH I COULD BE
Thinking maybe you'll come back here to the place THAT WE’D MEET
And you'll see me waiting for you on the corner of the street

So I'm not moving, I'm not moving

Policeman says, "Son, you can't stay here."
    I said, "There's someone I'm waiting for if it's a day, a month, a year.
Gotta stand my ground even IF IT RAINS OR SNOWS
If she changes her mind this is the first place she will go."

    [Chorus]

So I'm not moving, I'm not moving,
I'm not moving, I'm not moving

People talk about the guy THAT’S WAITING ON A GIRL
There are no holes in his shoes but a big hole in his world

And maybe I'll get famous as the man WHO CANNOT BE MOVED
Maybe you won't mean to but you'll see me on the news
And you'll come running to the corner
'Cause you'll know it's just for you
I'm the man WHO CANNOT BE MOVED
I'm the man WHO CANNOT BE MOVED

    [Chorus 2x]

Going back to the corner WHERE I FIRST SAW YOU
Gonna camp in my sleeping bag, I'm not gonna move

    1. Some of the clauses you capitalized are not noun clauses, so look closely.

Hint: If the clause follows a noun, then its an adjective clause. Remember how noun clauses function!!!

  6. R-Kelly, I BELIEVE I CAN FLY

I used to think THAT I COULD NOT GO ON
And life was nothing but an awful song
But now I know the meaning of true love
I'm leaning on the everlasting arms

If I can see it, then I can do it
If I just believe it, there's nothing to it

    I believe I CAN FLY
I believe I CAN TOUCH THE SKY
I think about it every night and day
Spread my wings and fly away

    I believe I CAN SOAR
I see me running through that open door
I believe I can fly, I believe I can fly
    I believe I can fly

See I was on the verge of breaking down
Sometimes silence can seem so loud
There are miracles in life I must achieve
But first I know it starts inside of me

IF I CAN SEE IT, then I can be it
IF I JUST BELIEVE IT, there's nothing to it

    I believe I can fly
I believe I can touch the sky
I think about it every night and day
    Spread wings and fly away

    I believe I can soar
I see me running through that open door
I believe I can fly, I believe I can fly

    1. If I can see it, then I can be it. "If I can see it" here is an adverb clause of condition, not a noun clause.

But the other noun clauses are good.

      Good luck in the contest!

  7. Bruno Mars,,,, When i was your man

Same bed but it feels just a little bit bigger now
Our song on the radio but it don't sound the same
WHEN OUR FRIENDS TALK ABOUT YOU, all it does is just tear me down
Cause my heart breaks a little WHEN I HEAR YOUR NAME

It all just sounds like oooooh…
Mmm, too young, too dumb to realize
THAT I SHOULD HAVE BOUGHT YOU FLOWERS
    And held your hand
Should have gave you all my hours
    WHEN I HAD THE CHANCE
    Take you to every party
Cause all you wanted to do was dance
    Now my baby's dancing
But she's dancing with another man

My pride, my ego, my needs, and my selfish ways
Caused a good strong woman like you to walk out my life
Now I never, never get to clean up the mess I made, ohh…
And it haunts me every time I close my eyes

It all just sounds like oooooh…
Mmm, too young, too dumb to realize
THAT I SHOULD HAVE BOUGHT YOU FLOWERS
    And held your hand
Should have gave you all my hours
    WHEN I HAD THE CHANCE
    Take you to every party
Cause all you wanted to do was dance
    Now my baby's dancing
But she's dancing with another man

    Although it hurts
I'll be the first to say THAT I WAS WRONG
Oh, I know I'm probably much too late
To try and apologize for my mistakes
But I just want you to know

I hope he buys you flowers
I hope he holds your hand
    Give you all his hours
    WHEN HE HAS THE CHANCE
    Take you to every party
Cause I remember HOW MUCH YOU LOVED TO DANCE
Do all the things I should have done
    WHEN I WAS YOUR MAN
Do all the things I should have done
    WHEN I WAS YOUR MAN

  8. Beyonce,,, If i were a boy

If I were a boy even just for a day
I'd roll out of bed in the morning
And throw on WHAT I WANTED
And go drink beer with the guys

    And chase after girls
I'd kick it with WHO I WANTED
And I'd never get confronted for it
'Cause they stick up for me

    If I were a boy
    I think I could understand
HOW IT FEELS TO LOVE A GIRL
    I swear I'd be a better man

    I'd listen to her
'Cause I know HOW IT HURTS
WHEN YOU LOSE THE ONE YOU WANTED
'Cause he's taking you for granted
And everything you had got destroyed

    If I were a boy
I would turn off my phone
    Tell everyone it's broken
So they'd think THAT I WAS SLEEPING ALONE

    I'd put myself first
And make the rules as I go
'Cause I know THAT SHE'D BE FAITHFUL
Waiting for me to come home, to come home

    If I were a boy
    I think I could understand
HOW IT FEELS TO LOVE A GIRL
    I swear I'd be a better man

    I'd listen to her
'Cause I know HOW IT HURTS
WHEN YOU LOSE THE ONE YOU WANTED
'Cause he's taking you for granted
And everything you had got destroyed

It's a little too late for you to come back
    Say it's just a mistake
Think I'd forgive you like that
IF YOU THOUGHT I would wait for you
    You thought wrong

    But you're just a boy
    You don't understand
    And you don't understand, oh
HOE IT FEELS TO LOVE A GIRL
Someday you wish you were a better man

    You don't listen to her
You don't care how it hurts
Until you lose the one you wanted
'Cause you're taking her for granted
And everything you had got destroyed
    But you're just a boy

    1. Holly, I have a question (If i were a boy) is it a conditional sentence or noun clause!!

      Delete
    2. In this song its a noun clause:

If I were a boy, I'd roll out of bed.
I'd roll out of bed if I were a boy.

If you can switch the order and it means the same, it's an adverb clause.

A noun clause functions as a noun: subject, object, or complement!

  9. Song: Kanye West - I Wonder
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rud9xO8VUg8

And I wonder IF YOU KNOW
WHAT IT MEANS, WHAT IT MEANS
And I wonder IF YOU KNOW
WHAT IT MEANS TO FIND YOUR DREAMS

I've been waiting on this my whole life
These dreams be waking me up at night
You say I think I'm never wrong
You know what, maybe you're right, aight

You say he get on your f**king nerves
You hope THAT HE GET WHAT HE DESERVES, word
Do you even remember WHAT THE ISSUE IS?
You just trying to find WHERE THE TISSUE IS
You can still be WHO YOU WISH you is
    It ain't happen yet
    And that's WHAT INTUITION IS
WHEN YOU HOP BACK IN THE CAR
    Drive back to the crib
    Run back to their arms
    The smokescreens
    The chokes and the screams
You ever wonder WHAT IT ALL REALLY MEANS?

And I'm back on my grind
    A psychic read my lifeline
    Told me in my lifetime
My name would help light up the Chicago skyline
    And that's WHAT I'M
    Seven o'clock, that's primetime
Heaven will watch, God calling from the hotlines
Why he keep giving me hot lines?
I'm a star, how could I not shine?
How many ladies in the house?
How many ladies in the house without a spouse?
Something in your blouse got me feeling so aroused
    what you about?
    On that independent shit
Trade it all for a husband and some kids
You ever wonder WHAT IT ALL REALLY MEAN?
You wonder IF YOU’LL EVER FIND YOUR DREAMS?

  10. Laura Pausini......it's not goodbye.

And what IF I NEVER KISS YOUR LIPS AGAIN
Or feel the touch of your sweet embrace

How would I ever go on

Without you there's no place to belong

Well someday love is gonna lead you back to me

But 'til it does I'll have an empty heart

So I'll just have to believe

Somewhere out there you thinking of me

    CHORUS:

Until the day I'll let you go

Until we say our next hello

    It's not goodbye
'
    Until I see you again

I'll be right here remembering when

And IF TIME IS ON OUR SIDE
There will be no tears to cry

    On down the road

There is one thing I can't deny

    It's not goodbye

You'd think I'd be strong enough to make it through

And rise above WHEN THE RAIN FALLS DOWN

But it's so hard to be strong

WHEN YOU ‘VE BEEN MISSING SOMEBODY SO LONG

It's just a matter of time I'm sure

But time takes time and I can't hold on

So won't you try as hard as you can

To put my broken heart together again

  11. Coldplay "Fix You"

WHEN YOU TRY YOUR BEST, but you don't succeed
WHEN YOU GET WHAT YOU WANT, but not WHAT YOU NEED
WHEN YOU FEEL SO TIRED, but you can't sleep
    Stuck in reverse

And the tears come streaming down your face
WHEN YOU LOSE SOMETHING YOU CAN'T REPLACE
WHEN YOU LOVE SOMEONE, but it goes to waste
    Could it be worse?

    Lights will guide you home
    And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

And high up above or down below
WHEN YOU'RE TOO IN LOVE to let it go
But IF YOU NEVER TRY you'll never know
    Just WHAT YOU'RE WORTH

    Lights will guide you home
    And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

    Tears stream down your face
WHEN YOU LOSE SOMETHING YOU CANNOT REPLACE
    Tears stream down your face
    And I...

    Tears stream down your face
I promise you I will learn from my mistakes
    Tears stream down your face
    And I...

    Lights will guide you home
    And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

  12. "Never Been Better"

    Once upon a time
    A long ago
    I wore a pretty dress
And you put a flower in my hair
    Said I shine like gold
From WHAT YOU HAVE NEVER KNOWN
    Said I am more precious
Than anything you've ever been told
    So here's the story
    Here it goes
A boy falls for a girl
    Yeah that story's just
    the same and same on
She wants to fall so in love
    But everyone around her
    tells her no
    But she don't care because

    Cause we are one
    WHEN WE ARE TOGETHER
    Cause we belong
    Forever and ever
    Cause WHEN YOU ARE HERE
    I've never been better
An WHEN I AM IN YOUR ARMS
    That's WHERE I WANNA BE
    So there's no stopping me
    oh oh oh oh

She has to keep her distance
    But she don't wanna listen,no
    He tells her that patience
    is the key
But this patience is killing me
    So here's the story
    Here it goes
    I will be your princess

That is "Where I wanna be" is a noun clause.
