Grammar 8.3: Modals of advice (due Wednesday, June 12)

I'm planning to visit your country at the end of this term and I need your advice. Please tell me what I need to know in order to have a safe and enjoyable visit. Use several of the modals/expressions for advice and suggestions that we've practiced so far: should, shouldn't, had better (not), must (not), ought to, (not) supposed to, could, why don't you, don't have to, and have to. Your response should be in paragraph form.

You can start your response like this:

Holly, I'm so excited that you've decided to come visit my country. In order for you to have a safe and enjoyable visit in (YOUR COUNTRY), here is what you need to know. First, ... Second, ... Third,... and Lastly,... You have to DEVELOP your paragraph, which means you MUST provide enough support for each point you make. A good paragraph should have 12-15 complex sentences. I want just ONE PARAGRAPH.

  1. Holly, I'm so excited that you 've decided to come visit my country. For having the most enjoyable and safe trip, here are some pointer you should know. First, if you plan to visit northern, you'd better bring coat and boot, there might be snow and very cold. But in southern, you can just wear short and shirt, it's too hot there. Second, don't try to have food in small restaurant because the oil they use is very dirty and it will cause you sick. The oil they use is from the food that people already had, which means it is disgusting and dirty. So keep away from small and dirty restaurant though some of them supply really tasty foods. Third, seriously, for foreigner in China, you'd better buy a mask which could clean the air you breath because the air pollution in China is very severe, the sky is dark and always haze. So those are my suggestions and you should better remember them. Thank you! And hope you have a nice trip!

Gosh, Enrique, it seems difficult to have a nice trip if I have to worry so much about the food I eat and the air I breathe!

Some advice from your teacher? Do not get a job in the tourism industry in your country ;)

  2. Hi Holly, I am glad that you are going to visit my country. I hope you enjoy to see some beautiful places that we have. first, you should go to the "Gran Sabana". There you can find mountains because it is a jungle!. If you like to be involved in the nature, you should go and see different kind of animal, plants and fountain. But you must no go before to put a vaccine that protects your body to dangerous animal.Second, in Venezuela we have a lot of beach, so if you like to share with your family and pass a great time, you should go to "Margarita". The name of the beach is "Playa El Agua". But you have to be carefully because the sun is hard, for that reason I recommend you to use a sun protection to you and your family. Finally, if you prefer to be in a desert, you could go to "Falcon" in "Los Medanos de Coro." My advice is to dress confortable clothes because it is too hot. You should bring a lot of water. To sum up, I think that in Venezuela we have all, beach, desert and jungle in one place. so, it is going to be a cheap travel because you can find all this places in just one country :)

My very strongly advice is that you have to be careful, and you had better make tours with a tour company and do not take any taxi on the streets. 9. Hi Holly,
I do not think it is good idea to visit my country for now. Because there are many problems in the best cities in Turkey. However, if you really want to go and support the people who fight for democracy and their rights I have some advices for you.
1- You should get a gas mask because you can be exposed to tear gas and i do not want to see you when you are crying.(smiling all the time really fit in your character)
2- You must get training about martial art it doesn't matter which one but i would prefer Alkido In order to protect yourself from people who do not have brain.
3-You should get some books because when we protest the government, we read books and we sing( Actually you do not need books when you go there somebody is going to give you books)
Finally you do not need to book Hotel you can stay in a tent and there are buffet meal. the people who protest government share their foods and foods are really delicious

    1. 1. advice, not advices (advice is non-count, although we could say pieces of advice)

In response to your wonderful tips:

      1. Tear gas is okay for me, because I think crying is important. It helps me express my full range of emotions. Laughing all the time gets monotonous.

      2. A long time ago I learned a little Okinawa Te, but I think Aikido is a good suggestion. Do I have to actually roll on the floor? I think what I need is a form of martial arts that I can do in the pool, but that might not be very practical.

Regarding protecting myself from people who don't have a brain, I have to do that in the U.S. as well. Brainless people know no borders.

      3. Maybe Focus on Grammar? I'm thinking maybe I can teach a class during the protest. That way the Turkish people would be protesting and learning English at the same time. What do you think?

      4. The free meal plan sounds great. I'm just a little bit worried about the food being too salty due to the tear gas.

  13. Dear Holly,
I'm extremely glad that you are going to my country, Thailand. Here they are some tips and tricks for you in order to save some of your money, safe your life, and enjoy your trip. First of all, you should exchange your dollars to Thai currency, Thai baht. In Thailand, one U.S. dollar equal thirty Thai baht which you can buy a lunch meal on sidewalk restaurants. Furthermore, after landing and exchanging your money at the airport, you should take a taxi to your hotel booked via the Internet. Even though, there are several ways to commute, but taxi is the best way because it is cheap, fast, and safe. Tricks! you had better to let the taxi driver press the meter so that you will know how much money you have to pay to him/her because a few of them will cheat you with offering you the higher price. In addition, the more traveler come to visit my country, the more climes are occurred. If you have a chance to visit the south where there are plenty of famous beaches, you should not dress the bikini and walk around to every where you would like to. It is different between Europe and Thai culture that Thai people do not wear bikini when they are on the beach. Therefore, you should be aware all the time about your dressing if you do not want to be a victim of sexual harassment. Finally, Thailand has many places, restaurant, market, and show you should go and get wonderful experiences you have never had before. Thus, you should do some researches before you come to Thailand. I hope you will have novel experiences!

      5. Thanks for the tip about sexual harassment. That's not a problem for me because I wouldn't be caught dead in a bikini at my age!
