A good essay will contain the following:
1. An interesting introduction (6-10 sentences) that ends with a clear thesis statement which indicates cause OR effect. (The appetizer)
2. 3 body paragraphs (12-15 sentences) which begin with clear topic sentences. (The main course)
3. 1 concluding paragraph (3-5 sentences) (The dessert)
(Of course I mean COMPLEX SENTENCES, not simple sentences.)
4. All paragraphs should have UNITY and COHESION.
5. The language of cause and effect should be used. Remember, there are many ways to express your ideas, so please vary your style.
6. Your essay should be checked for errors. I will remove 5 points for each RO or CS error. Also, I will remove 2 points for each VT error.
7. Don't use the word THING! I will remove 2 points if I see this word in your essay!
8. Don't begin a sentence with a conjunction (AND or BUT). Use Also, However, or another transition instead. I will remove 3 points if you make this error.
Don't forget:
1. DOUBLE SPACE and keep 1 inch margins.
2. Center and capitalize your title at the top of the page.
3. Clearly label each draft (first draft, second draft, final draft; you don't need more than two, but if you have more than two, I'd like to see them).
