Today each of you briefly introduced yourselves to the class. Now I
would like you to tell us some more about yourself in writing.
Here are some questions to consider:
Where
are you in life (meaning, what stage)? Did you finish high
school? College? Graduate school? Are you single or married? Do you have kids?
Talk about your background,
and your professional and personal aspirations. Also, discuss your
interests, hobbies, and talents. Tell us something about yourself
that makes you unique. Feel free to add anything else that you would
like to share about yourself with the class.
You should post your writing as a comment to this post. Just click on comment.
This is writing PRACTICE. It does not have to be perfect.
Hi, dear classmates and Holly. I am glad to meet all of you in level 5 at LCC. I have a lot of expectations about this course because I am planning to stay only for summer. During this time, I want to improve my pronunciation and my writing skills. I am planning to write an academic paper and make a presentation in English in September, so I really need to work-out on those skills.
ReplyDeleteRight now, I am taking a break. I finished my master degree in Norway last year in June and I started working right-away, but I was feeling tired and down due to the Norwegian weather. That’s the reason I decided to come to a place with a lot of sun, do something different, meet new people and practice English. I hope after this course, I can decide between return back to Colombia or make a geology Phd at the UH. But for the moment I just want to focus on fun things! I like to read, go to museums, talks and libraries. I also love, tent camping and spend a weekend outside. It is really peaceful out there.
This is my story and my plans for the summer. I am very motivated with the English course and I am looking forward to discover Houston and enjoy what the city has to offer. See you in class.

DeleteMy name is Carole Franklin and I come from Scotland. My maiden name (unmarried) was Carole Flisch. Can you guess where my paternal grandfather came from?
ReplyDeleteWhen I was young I went to Glasgow University in Scotland where I received a Bachelor's degree in French and German. I also studied at Jordanhill College of Education to learn how to be a teacher. I taught French and German in high schools in Glasgow, Scotland, for 12 years. I have also lived and worked in France, Germany, Switzerland and Greece, and I have traveled to almost all European countries and India on vacation. As you can see, I love to travel.
I immigrated to the USA in fall 1989 and became an American citizen in spring 1999. I have dual nationality: British and American, so I can travel and work freely in Europe without having to have a visa or work permit.
In 1991, I graduated from the University of Edinburgh with a Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics. So I am a doctor. My students sometimes don't like to call me Carole because they are not used to calling their teachers by their first names, so if you are shy about saying, "Carole" to me, you can call me Dr. Carole.
I am a vegetarian. I don't eat anything that had a mother. I can eat dairy products, but I seldom do because I have a slight allergy to milk. In actuality, therefore, I am a vegan. So please don't be offended if I cannot eat food that you prepare to share with your classmates. If you want to know why I am a vegetarian, it is because I do not believe that is right or necessary to kill and cause suffering to living creatures to fill our stomachs. Vegetables have very little consciousness.
I am divorced and live alone. I have two stepchildren from my former marriage and I still see them from time to time. Caroline is in Austin, Texas. She is a licensed pilot and flying instructor. She also renovates and rents houses. She is married, and has twins: a boy and a girl.
My stepson David is in New York. He is engaged to be married and works for CBS TV network as a film editor.
I still have family in Scotland – my brother and his family and one aunts. My mother who died in 2007 had eight siblings; only one is left. My father was an only child and he died in 1998. I also have a cousin in England to whom I am very close.
Hi Dr. Carole,

Also, I have gone camping in many places and can recommend some great trips. North America is just fabulous--and the good news is that if you camp, you can see it fairly cheaply. DeleteHola everyone! I'm Lissi from Venezuela. I just realized that the population of Venezuelan in UH is growing. I think we are six in level 5CDE, don't we? Talking about me, let me tell you that I used to hate English. I like to think that It was maybe due to my first experience with an English teacher who was from Barbados. She always mocked our Latin accent and was a horrible teacher, so I hated her and I hated English too. But the most important thing is that I'm now really enjoying English classes. I think I have improved a lot since I'm here. My goal is to improve my speaking and listening skills and speak it fluently, because in my career (Advertising) this is mandatory.
ReplyDeleteI wasn't that crazy about all of my Spanish teachers in high school either, so I understand what you mean. But I think its terrible that she made fun of your accent. Anyhow, I'm glad that your experiences here have been positive, and I'm certain that you have improved a lot since coming here, and that you will continue to improve with time.
DeleteI'm interested in hearing about your advertising experience.

ReplyDeleteYou sound like a very thoughtful and interesting person. I look forward to getting to know you and to reading your writing. As far as politics and religion go, in America we say that if you want to avoid trouble, you shouldn't talk about politics, religion, or sex :D
DeleteI agree with you, you're right, I aware how it's sensitive, therefore when I set in a church class I listening more than speaking. I do not want change others, I just want to know somethings.

DeleteHello, i am Catherine. I come from Beijing which is one of the biggest cities in China. I have been U.S for about 5 months and actually this is the second time i visit here. I had to choose to come Texas the first time due to the Travel and Work program that i took participate in about 2 years ago, i was sent to a group that work as a housekeeping in Galveston which is not far from here.
ReplyDeleteEven though i had the heavy workload to finish, i had to take care of myself, and organize my life, i still obtained abundant new abroad life experience, i widened my view ,and i built new friendship with people who some of them came different areas and nations, and who some of them are native.
During the vocation, i spent several days shopping and visiting in Houston.Of course, i liked this city as soon as i got there, because i am fond of the sunshiny and blue sky extremely, in contrast, the only thing i can see in my city where i was born is fog.
Actually, i have graduated in the same year as i participated the program, then i plan to work as a administrator in a middle school, however, why did i decide to come back? Not only the wonderful weather i prefer, but also the target that i think i should pursue as long as i have opportunity.
Catherine, it sounds like you have an adventurous spirit. It sounds like you are "going with the flow," letting your life take you in an interesting and unconventional direction. I really admire that. I hope your life's journey (and your journey in the USA) is filled with interesting people, places, and stories to tell.
Deleteyeah, you are right Holly, life is full of adventure and unknown things, it is the journal of life that attracts people a lot.
DeleteHello I'm Jennifer from Venezuela. I'm Computer engineer. I have been in U.S 1 year. My goal for this semester is to improve my English and helping me to practice for the test that I have to take here in UH. About me, I like simple things like watch TV, movies, ride bike, go to the park, listen to the music, etc.
ReplyDeleteI hope everyone enjoy this semester.
Good luck.
I wish you success in all of your goals, short term and long.
DeleteHi everyone, it is not too late, isn't it!
ReplyDeleteI'm Suddan (Dan 5C) from Thailand.
I have been in Houston for one year, and this is the third semester in the LCC. I think I am one of the unlucky men. Let me explain why?. Level three was my class I started in the first semester because I had got 58 points in Michigan Test which means that if I had had 59 points, I would have been in level 4. Furthermore, in the end of that term I got 71 points in the Compass test which also means that if I had got 72 points, I would have skipped to level 5. Thus, I had to study in level 4 that I thought it would be suitable for me. Do you think that this is enough for being the unlucky man? You are not right! After testing the Compass test again in level 4, I got 81 points! "What the heck is that! Is this for real?" I shouted as if I was a crazy dog because if I had got 82 points, I would have jumped to level 6. After that, I took one vocation term for preparing the TOEFL test. However I think that this might be my destiny that I have known you all.
